Reflexology, Yoga and Chakras

Reflexology is the application of pressure to areas on the feet, hands and ears. Reflexology is generally relaxing and may be an effective way to alleviate stress.

The theory behind reflexology is that these areas correspond to organs and systems of the body. Proponents believe that pressure applied to these areas affects the organs and benefits the person’s health.

Reflexologists use foot charts to guide them as they apply pressure to specific areas. Sometimes these practitioners use items, such as rubber balls, rubber bands and sticks of wood, to assist in their work. Practitioners of reflexology include chiropractors, physical therapists and massage therapists, among others.

Several studies funded by the National Cancer Institute and the National Institutes of Health indicate that reflexology may reduce pain and psychological symptoms, such as anxiety and depression, and enhance relaxation and sleep. Studies also show that reflexology may have benefits in palliative care of people with cancer.

Reflexology,  Yoga and Chakras

The feet come under the governing of the first chakra. They also contain  a minor chakra.Yoga has long dealt with the chakra system. Many modern day Scientists of the mind, recognize the importance of the hierarchy of healing taking place at the soul level first, and then healing funnels down into the body.  The feet, included in the realm of the first chakra, represent our first questions, which are usually around family superstitions, doubts and issues. One can awaken these energy centers through meditation. Meditation is one way to look at beliefs in the form of perceptions and thus begin to deconstruct the foundations of un-serving and limiting old tribal belief systems.

This is nothing new. The history of Chakras discovers that although they are first mentioned in the Vedas,  which are ancient Hindu texts of knowledge there are even earlier texts. Early texts provide the location of the chakras as defined  in the various Upanishads. Hiroshi Motoyama in Consciousness” discusses these text and that of 10th Century mystic Guru Goraknath who wrote in the Gorakshashatakam about the chakra energy centers but there is even the older, oral tradition of the Aryan culture. This Aryan culture was believed to have invaded India around 1500 BCE. It is interesting to note that  both the Chakras and the Auras are associated with the colors in the rainbow, ROY G BIV. the Rainbow, light broken into color vibrations was prevalent in the Norse or Teutonic myth’s World Tree; Native Americans have practiced  a rainbow ceremony as part of a medicine wheel.

In the most modern day sciences of the mind, we realize that all light is the source of all beings and even non-beings. The light is not visible with the body’s eyes and needs to be accessed through the spiritual eye, the eye of creativity or the eye of inner searching. Reflexology is a path to this inner wisdom and discovery. By loving touch on the foot, the mind relaxes and one attains a still mind  which is what is needed to be open and hear the Voice for Healing.

Aside from the nerve endings of the body being in the feet, there is also a meridian connection from the Asian arts. Enough said about connections.

Reflexology,  Yoga and Chakras

As the first chakra governs feet one needs to explore the beliefs associated with familial and tribal bonds. One needs to question and sometimes even bust the superstitious beliefs that are self-limiting.  The key is to understand that our beliefs create thoughts, thoughts generate emotions. So issues regarding group safety, abandonment perceptions and tribal codes, whether conscious or sub conscious, all need to be examined. One needs to question the patterns of authority which are holding one in a state of stagnation. It is difficult to question the hidden. This is where a yoga practice helps one to see the hidden limiting beliefs. Yoga stills the mind and deepens the concentration which allows one to go deeper inside, carrying a light to see what is hidden.

The feet affect mood, OCD, addiction and the bones and veins on the physical realm. The first chakra is the foundation for all emotional and mental health. It connects us to the traditional family beliefs which are necessary to question and not blindly follow. This supports our identity and can free us and connect us to our higher self. The immune system is also associated with this chakra and so the feet are a symbol of our mental and emotional health.

We are having many wonderful workshops this quarter which can instill a pleasant way of cracking the hidden beliefs so one can examine them and if necessary, replace them with beliefs that encourage joy and nurturing and Self-Love. There is a special TGIF class that will deal with the feet and ears and hands and show the relaxation points in these overused parts of the body. Revolutionary Yoga rocks quite a bit on the feet.  The first of these workshops is Reflexology which begins on September 25 Friday and Saturday September 26, with Karla Brandis.  See if this is one way that can help you by clicking on this link and reading more about Karla and Reflexology. There is the constellation workshop which is offered on the last Tuesday of September to heal the invisible roots of old emotional trauma. Registration is also required for that. And as Free Spirit runs through the chakras you might catch the Sunday evening where she deals with First Chakra energies. Deb Levine also will offer  Chakra Yoga in October.
