Jerry Mayfield

Originally from Missouri, Jerry Mayfield and his family moved to Maine from New Jersey in 2009. He has shared Sahaja Yoga for nearly 20 years in universities, libraries, prisons, rehabilitation facilities, community centers, street fairs, and in a mid-town Manhattan elevator stuck between floors.

A self-described seeker of truth, Jerry had read many spiritual books, but felt he remained lost in the web of words.

Not long after moving to New York City in 1997, Jerry found a flyer on a Seventh Avenue sidewalk advertising a public program by H.H. Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine. “The word Buddha comes from the word Bodh, which means to know the truth on your central nervous system,” Shri Mataji explained. At the time, Jerry happened to be reading a thick book on Buddhism and he understood the reference to be a sign that he was in the right place at the right time as the words began to describe actual experience. Still, his western intellect wanted to understand something more.

Beginning Her work in 1970, Shri Mataji had been traveling the world for 27 years, giving the experience of self-realization (kundalini awakening) to all who desired to have it – free of charge. Jerry searched the indexes and glossaries of yoga and meditation books he found in the market, but continued to be perplexed since he could not find a single reference to Sahaja yoga. Persistent, Jerry researched and at the NY Public Library he came across the poetry of Kabir, a 15th century poet-saint who often used the word Sahaj in his writings. It was this “Ah ha” moment that confirmed Jerry’s belief that he was indeed on the right path. The student was ready and the Teacher had appeared.

As the founder of Sahaja Yoga in modern times, Shri Mataji gave self-realization to hundreds of thousands around the globe, but encouraged all who received this gift to become the catalyst for giving it to others, like one candle enlightening another. It is in this tradition and with tremendous respect, gratitude, and humility that Jerry enthusiastically continues to share the knowledge and experience of Sahaja Yoga meditation
